Instead of waiting for your next doctor’s appointment to find out how your digestive health is doing, health expert Jonny Bowden suggests you just peek into your toilet bowl. You can consider its contents your daily lab test results. The celebrity nutritionist brought clay poop models to Portland Today’s set to show viewers what’s healthy and what’s not. This made the hosts giggle but it made us smile. Why? Because Bowden explained that Regular Girl has what it takes to help keep your gut in shape.
Bowden suggested reviewing the Bristol Stool Chart which is a visual representation of stool types. “It should look like a foot-long floater with no odor. It should be like a deep-sea diver,” joked Bowden. “You don’t want all the cracks. You don’t want it to look like rabbit food. Here’s why this matters: We now know that the microbiome -- which is the gut flora that we all walk around with; the trillions of non-human cells that we all hold in our gut every day – is related to depression, schizophrenia and weight gain. It’s related to just about everything you can imagine.”
A healthy gut promotes regularity. “You need to get these probiotics in your gut. And you need to take them as a supplement because nobody’s getting enough,” said Bowden who also stressed the importance of caring for those healthy bacteria. “Fiber is great and it keeps you regular. But there’s a second kind of fiber. It’s called prebiotic fiber. This is the food for those good bacteria.” Many people think only of insoluble fiber, found in whole grains, nuts and leafy vegetables, when they think of fiber.
Regular Girl contains both beneficial bacteria and prebiotic soluble fiber. “It’s something that everybody should take,” said Bowden. “This is a mix of both the good bacteria and the food that feeds them.” Regular Girl’s fiber is a truly regulating fiber. It helps firm occasional loose stools as well as decrease occasional constipation without additional (and uncomfortable) side effects.
